These images are of work created by students for their ‘A’ level examinations. The examination was Art and Design, but the learning skills and experiences have always been applicable to all creative endeavours.
Curriculum breadth and scope
Once again there is a curriculum review in the offing. This has prompted a debate about the role of ‘design’ in the current art and design curriculum. It is not talked about much, and most of the models of practice come from the world of fine art. But it has always been the case that the subject of art provides the underlying grammar, knowledge and aesthetic sensitivity to feed future careers across the creative sector.
These images show how the art and design curriculum supports: creative problem-solving, aesthetic sensibility, critical thinking, cultural learning, visual literacy, imagination, research skills, technical, craft and manual skills, materials intelligence, persistence, design skills, social perception and awareness, empathy, adaptability, flexibility, etc.
These experiences are relevant to any career in the creative industries: Advertising, Illustration, Graphics, Photography, Film, Television, Animation, Theatre, Jewelry, Product Design, Environmental Design, Games Design, Fashion, Textiles, etc.
These photographs of students’ creative work were taken at school art exhibitions open to the public between 2005 and 2010.
